Why I created self care spa bathroom

I took over my guest bathroom, and here’s why.  My time, my energy and my physical body (hello, breastfeeding) have been dedicated to my son since the day that he was born.  And although I have absolutely no problem with that, I realized that I needed something of my own.  So after almost a year of motherhood, I carved out a space for myself.

Self-care has been buzzing around everywhere lately.  It was a huge focus for my team when I was a school psychologist, because one of my roles was crisis response counseling.  This typically involves the death of a student or teacher, and can make for some very heavy days.  We always emphasized self-care for everyone who was personally impacted by the crisis, as well as those of us who responded as counselors.  Once I was no longer in that role, I allowed my own self-care to decline, focusing only on the needs of my family and getting things done around the house.  The self-care buzz on social media reminded me that I needed to take care of myself in order to better take care of my family.

“You cannot pour from an empty cup.”

So with all of that in mind, I ran into the guest bathroom and locked the door behind me! Just kidding, kind of… *wink* It was a little less dramatic than that. I told August that I needed some space and time to myself, then moved all of my body care products up to the guest bathroom.  The biggest reason that I chose the guest bathroom for my self-care space is that I love to take long showers, listen to music, and sometimes even sing.  Atlas’ crib sits right outside of our master bathroom, making it impossible for me to continue my shower performances there.  In the guest bathroom, I’m Beyonce on stage.

Spa Inspired Bathroom Décor

I’ll be honest, I didn’t have to do much in order to make this spa like self-care bathroom a reality.  I already wanted the guest bathroom to give off hotel vibes, and it has been decorated that way for a long time.  This made it even easier for me to move right in and settle into the spa like atmosphere.

I went with a neutral color scheme in order to bring a sense of calm and relaxation to the space.  Beige, tan, white and cream are the most prominent tones in the guest bathroom décor.  Espresso wood ties everything together, and mirror and glass bring touches of luxury and glamour.  Finally, calming blue wall art soothes the tired eye.

In the bathroom, I like to use functional décor as much as possible.  Candles and bath bombs can be displayed as art pieces.  Strategically placing sponges, bath salts and other useful bathroom items in beautiful apothecary jars creates the feeling of being at a luxurious spa where these products will be used for your treatment.  And there’s just something about taking a cotton ball out of a fancy glass jar that the flimsy bag they come in could never replicate.  It’s bougie.  It’s extra.  It’s everything.

Textiles are one of the most important features of a bathroom.  Plush robes, fluffy rugs, and soft towels are a major key to making the bathroom feel amazing.  If you want to create a hotel or spa like bathroom, go for pure white.  Have you ever been to a hotel or spa that didn’t have white towels?  I haven’t.  And if I ever did, I would be very suspicious of why they weren’t white.  We’ve been conditioned to expect white towels in hotels and spas, so you automatically make the connection when you use them at home.  Just fold and display them nicely and you’ve got the look.  The towels that I use are organic cotton and they are amazingly plush.  Plus, the pattern makes them look super sleek when folded.

What can a self care bathroom do for you?

  1. Promotes Relaxation

A spa-like self-care bathroom promotes relaxation. It can help you unwind after a long day at work or a stressful event. By creating a soothing atmosphere, you can turn your bathroom into a sanctuary where you can relax and rejuvenate your mind and body.

  1. Encourages Self-Care

Having a spa-like bathroom encourages self-care. You can take care of your body, mind, and spirit in the comfort of your own home. With a bathtub, candles, and essential oils, you can create an environment that promotes self-care and helps you to feel refreshed and energized.

  1. Enhances Mental Health

A self-care bathroom can also enhance your mental health. Taking a bath with essential oils, listening to relaxing music, or practicing meditation in your bathroom can help you to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve your mood. It’s important to take care of your mental health, and a spa-like self-care bathroom is a great way to do that.

  1. Provides a Personal Retreat

Finally, a spa-like self-care bathroom can provide a personal retreat. It’s a place where you can escape from the world and take care of yourself. You can enjoy a bubble bath, read a book, or simply relax in a calming environment. It’s your personal sanctuary, and it’s important to create a space that reflects your personality and meets your needs.

It’s so simple to create a luxurious, spa-like bathroom for self-care.  I’m extremely happy that I decided to take over my guest bathroom to create this space for myself.  I’ve spent evenings sitting in the bathtub, burning a candle and listening to relaxing R&B music.  I’ve spent mornings singing in the shower.  And even a few extra minutes some afternoons sitting on the side of the tub scrolling through Instagram.  It’s my own little slice of the house, and I really needed it.
