Watermelon Agua Fresca Ingredients

  • 4 cups cubed seedless watermelon
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons agave or honey

How to Make Watermelon Agua Fresca

Making watermelon agua fresca will take you less time than it takes to read this blog post. Just add your watermelon, water, lime juice, and agave to a blender and blend until its smooth and consistent. This is the best point to taste and adjust the ingredients to your liking. Add more lime or sweetener to suit your tastes. Strain the blended mixture to remove any pulp or seeds. Put the watermelon agua fresca in the fridge to chill for at least an hour. Serve the agua fresca over ice cubes and garnish with mint leaves (optional) and a glass straw for extra razzle dazzle!

How to Strain Agua Fresca

When it comes to making agua fresca, straining is a must. Do not skip this step! If you do, the texture will definitely be off and ruin your experience. There are a few ways that you can strain agua fresca to get a smooth and pulp free consistency. Here are some of the different ways to strain agua fresca.

  1. Nut Milk Bag: This is the straining method that I use. I think that it is the best method for straining the pulp for a smooth and water-like finished product. Open the nut milk bag over a large pitcher or bowl. Pour the agua fresca into the bag and gently squeeze it to strain the liquid away from the pulp. These are the nut milk bags that I used in my video.
  2. Fine-Mesh Sieve: This method is a close second. A mesh sieve is a common staple in most kitchens, so you may have this readily available. Place a fine-mesh sieve over a pitcher or bowl and pour the blended agua fresca through it. Use a spoon to press down on the pulp and extract as much liquid as possible.
  3. Cheesecloth: If you’re trying to decide between a cheesecloth and a nut milk bag, I recommend the nut milk bag. But, if you already have a cheesecloth and don’t have a nut milk bag, it will work almost as well. Use the same pour and squeeze method as you would for the nut milk bag.

More Agua Fresca Varieties

  1. Strawberry Agua Fresca: Replace the watermelon with fresh strawberries and follow the same recipe. Add a splash of orange juice for a citrusy twist.
  2. Pineapple Agua Fresca: Blend fresh pineapple chunks with water, lime juice, and a touch of agave or honey. Serve over ice for a tropical treat.
  3. Cucumber-Lime Agua Fresca: Puree peeled and seeded cucumbers with lime juice, water, and a hint of sugar. Serve chilled with cucumber slices for a refreshing spa-inspired drink.
  4. Mango Agua Fresca: Blend ripe mangoes with water, lime juice, and a drizzle of honey. Serve over ice and garnish with fresh mint leaves.
  5. Cantaloupe Agua Fresca: Combine blended cantaloupe with water, lime juice, and a touch of agave syrup. Sprinkle with a pinch of chili powder for a delicious kick.
